Athens Bus Stop
Public transportation is an inherently public act, where interactions with strangers, whether street performers or commuters, are inevitable. For this competition for a bus stop inspired by the Athens, GA music scene, we envisioned the bus stop as a stage. As REM fans, the song, “Beat a Drum” was chosen as the conceptual basis of the design. Salvaged snare drums are encased and displayed between two pieces of ¾” polygal which also creates a wall pattern that will play with light and shadow. Steel fabricated drum “heads” on the roof will sound when rain falls, creating a gentle musical rhythm. We designed a series of cables that allow people to clip their fliers to them, creating a colorful backdrop that is very much reflective of the current Athens music scene and events.
