This deck redesign overlooks Brush Creek and the Plaza shopping district in Kansas City, Missouri. To create a more private area but maintain desirable views of large trees and the city, a translucent, glass privacy screen was introduced around the perimeter. A steel frame was welded to support glass panels edged in anodized aluminum, reminiscent of shoji screens. A digitally manipulated image of a Kentucky Coffee tree, previously located on site, is fritted on the surface of some of the panels mixed with panels of a milky white translucency. The translucent patterning of the tree on the glass creates subtle textured surfaces that visually blend with the existing trees and filter the light. The bench and furnishings pull the space together to create an outdoor room.
