Design MMoCA

DA+UD participated in Design MMoCA, a four day event in which designers were asked to choose a work of art from which to draw inspiration to design a residential space.  We chose "Robert Manipulated" by Chuck Close.  The shelving unit takes inspiration from the gridded method of Close's piece, as well as the use of concentric circles to build a larger pattern, a technique used in his later paintings.  3-axis, a custom furniture fabrication shop based in the Kansas City area, donated the labor for this piece.  The surface is finished with a "safecoat" clear, water based finish that is very low in VOC's (volatile organic compounds) making it less toxic than traditional finishes.
