Red Star
The Red Star building located in Kansas City’s historic Westside neighborhood, had previously been used as a ceramic artist studio and gallery. DA+UD worked with the clients to transform the 1923 building into offices for each of their businesses as well as an event space that can be rented out for gatherings and receptions. We worked closely with the clients to program the space to fit their needs and did so by inserting a functional modern interior into the historic shell. DA+UD worked strategically to reuse as much of the existing mechanical, plumbing and electrical infrastructure as possible while updating fixtures, ductwork and creating ADA accessible restrooms. The building was very cramped and had a maze-like configuration but now has a clear and distinct flow and relationship between its spaces. Wall openings were carefully created to provide views throughout the space as well as to provide daylight.
