405 SW Boulevard
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
405 SW BLVD is located at the corner of SouthwestTrafficway and Broadway Boulevard in Kansas City, a gateway to the historic Crossroads neighborhood. The 3-phased project included restoration of the 110 year old building, replication of the once existing historic storefront, and the design of a permeable paved surface parking lot behind the building. A rain garden is fed by the run off from the roof of the building. Issues of vehicular and pedestrian access, economy and sustainability were all important to the overall design. DA+UD worked with the building owner, who adopted the surrounding park space for improvement and maintenance, as well as the Parks and Recreation department to beautify this prominent city corner.
GREEN DESIGN ELEMENTS:
Mid America Regional Council Sustainable Success Stories honorees, 2009; Roof supplies water to adjacent rain gardens consisting of native plantings. Permeable pavers used in the parking area and surrounding walkways. Reclaimed materials, as well as recycled content were used for interior finishes. Air quality was improved through the use of low VOC finishes and a high efficiency furnace with a U.V. air filter.
